Murano

MURANO was founded by the inhabitants of Altino fleeing from Attila’s barbarians in 452. Important since ancient times for the port (and Venice cruise port), it is the largest of the lagoon islands.

It was visited by Phoenician, Roman and Byzantine merchant ships.

Churches, monasteries and convents adorn the island with flower and vegetable gardens.

Famous throughout the world for working blown and artistic glass.

The glassworks were first built in early Venetia, but the numerous fires led to them being moved away, helping make this flower of the lagoon unique.
